You may have a lot of professional /personal opinion-based answer to this query. People in this profession or in your circle, senior People with years & years of experience will tell a lot and say a lot but that is not true what they use to say.
There is a hypocrisy in this field of people. HSE profession and HSE
professionals are sometimes two different things.
People coming new to this field will not able to understand or survive as
understanding attitude nature of someone you have to report, or you have to
work with is not easy or people tends to hide an actual thing.
There was a time when HSE was a passion for people but now its just way of
earning likelihood.
HSE is one of the best profession but the slogans like safety first , Safety
/HSE is a priority , Safe man hours ,safety is moral obligation all these are
just myth far away from reality no one willing to say it openly but this the
fact.
Most People Join HSE for its unique way of a job, people think that this is an
easy job but it is not.
HSE professional need to be very patient very good in communication skill, the
myths and hypocrisy of senior management (HSE/Technical) is a very big hurdle
to bear and still work for the betterment of the company and its employees.
As a HSE professional since 2020 what I have learned or experienced is that
every new coming HSE needs to learn a lot be logical in his professional answer
and talks. Have courage and time to listen to others., accept mistakes and be
logical ins answer especially having evidence of quoting regulations (local
regulations as well)
Being HSE professional I will say that this slogan ‘’SAFETY FIRST) is a myth and fake all companies from drilling Oil & gas to EPC, Large size construction to small construction level, Manufacturing sector all priorities production.
Safety is a legal obligation that’s why it is being followed or implemented but
not to the full extent. Always take the middle approach don’t try to be perfect
it is not possible to always eliminate the hazard or to make 100 percent safety
culture but to be reasonable.
As HSE
managers/Technical managers are saving their jobs so do others have the same
right being diplomatic and seeing what to report what not report is very
significant and that is main learning.
There comes a time where HSE people will be demotivated but that is the
time to be patient and save job keep your all record and learn new things.
HSE is a good job to do and to keep at the end everyone has the right to and
have to earn likelihood.
